Your Success Story Is 21 Days Away

Another round of our signature “21 Day Transformation” wellness program starts after Memorial Day weekend.

If you hate pizza and burgers, you will definitely not like the meal plan.

Chocolate? Wine? Cocktails? BLECH. All of those things are allowed in the 21 Day Transformation too, so we’re sure you’re not interested.

And if your kids are natural broccoli and kale lovers, and you don’t ever struggle with making healthy meals that your family will actually eat, then this plan will be of no use to you.

Just in case our sarcasm font is broken…

We ABSOLUTELY think you should consider joining us for the next round of the 21 Day Transformation. We believe that eating great-tasting, real food is a pretty universal value, so our wellness coach Gina Schade has designed this program so that it can be customized to meet your specific needs, whatever they may be. Meet the Barre Tender: Olivia

We’re thrilled to announce the addition of two new barre tenders to the B Team: Lisa and Olivia!

We asked them to tell us a little bit more about themselves in their own words. Without further ado…meet Olivia!

What are you most looking forward to in your new role as B Present Studio barre tender?

I believe what I am looking forward to the most is being able to push the dynamic, incredible, and strong women (and few brave gentlemen) that attend our classes to help them set and reach goals they may never have thought were possible (whether it’s doing one push-up on your toes, staying in relevé during the entire barre series, or rocking every tuck jump after those burpees).

Being a barre tender is truly about leading class FOR our Beauties. I am so excited to be able to encourage and show our clients that they are stronger than they may have ever dreamt of–in not only their bodies, but minds and spirits as well.

Any funny stories to share from your experience as a B Present student?

So there was that one time in 100 Club when I face planted while doing eagle push-ups and the sweet Beauty next to me stopped to ask if I was alright….but I mean, who HASN’T done that?!

What do you like to do when you’re not working out?

I work part time as the coordinator of the Youth Leadership program at Leadership South Bend/Mishawaka, which keeps me busy during the week. I am also a mom to two lovely littles, Max (6) and Evy (2.5), and will be training for my fourth marathon this October.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

I almost hit a deer one day, while RUNNING down a country road on a beautiful fall day. I don’t know who was more scared, me or her! I was fussing with my phone, trying to check a message (most likely from my husband) and looked up just in time to stop myself from running smack into the side of a doe. A deer. A female deer. (You can’t make this stuff up!)

Aside from your cute barre booty (which you totally have), how has B Present made an impact on your life?

B Present has truly helped me step out of my comfort zone…on so many different occasions and in so many ways. I am a firm believer that the true magic in your life happens when you are out of your comfort zone. From first walking in to doors two years ago as a fitness/cardio junkie who had no idea what class was going to be like, and was scared and uncomfortable at first (then quickly an addict) to placing a microphone on my left ear and leading others though my first full barre class (Tammy’s Barre Blast, no pressure!! Haha!)–I have grown so much within the walls of those two studios.

What do you want all of your future Barre Beauties to know coming into your class?

I want to challenge you. Class will be hard but it will be SOOOO worth it and yes, you CAN do it! You will always have modifications available to suit your body BUT I want to push you (safely, of course) and then CELEBRATE with you when you meet your goals. …..And there will probably be burpees involved (unless it is a low-impact class of course, then we can modify them. 😉 )

Best College Bar{re} in Town

We love so many things about the South Bend/Mishawaka/Granger area, but right at the top of the list is that it’s such a fabulous college town. Our local colleges and universities bring so much to our hometown: opportunities for lifelong learning, football Saturdays, beautiful campuses to explore, and–best of all–interesting people from all over the world who come here to work and study. Plenty of area college students have found their way through our doors over the years, and though they may only be here for a short time, these young women are a valuable part of the B Present community.

We love our local colleges and universities!

New Year, New You: B Present Group Wellness Coaching

Something about flipping the calendar to a brand new year makes all of us step back for a moment and re-evaluate where we are and where we want to be. (In northern Indiana in December, the literal answer to that question is “at the beach.” Always.)

Getting on track with diet, exercise, and overall health & lifestyle takes the perennial top spot on lists of New Year resolutions; it’s so common it’s practically a cliché. Also cliché? Falling off the wagon by March and having to make the same resolution again next year!

Meet the Yogis: Megan and Kate

When we rolled out our brand new schedule last month, it didn’t just mean some new class times and formats in the class lineup–it meant some fresh faces on the B Team too! We are thrilled to welcome two new yoga instructors, Kate F. and Megan H., to our growing team. Along with barre tender/yoga instructor Kara B., they are now leading yoga classes every week at B Present. Read on to find out more about Kate and Megan, how their respective journeys with B Present began, why they love yoga–and why you will too!

Kate F.: Fast Facts

  • Originally from the Detroit area
  • Completed undergraduate work at Michigan State University; currently a third year law student at Notre Dame. Hopes to go into litigation: “I have a big mock trial coming up on Saturday and that will be my first real experience in the courtroom. We’ll see how it goes!”
  • Loves to travel: “I lived in Amsterdam for a month before I started law school, I spent last semester studying abroad in London, I lived in France for three months during undergrad for an internship, and I lived in Washington D.C. for the last two summers working for a small law firm.”

New Schedule, More Classes: Behind the Scenes with Tammy

When was the last time you did something for the first time?

You’ve probably noticed some big changes on the class schedule lately: new class times, new instructors, and even brand new classes. What’s going on around here?!

We talk a lot about comfort zones at B Present Studio. To put it mildly…we’re not a fan of them! “I’m always watching clients’ bodies and results and even mindsets,” says B Present founder and co-owner Tammy Weisweaver. “We have such a loyal following and people who have been with us for years now. We also have brand new clients coming in all the time, but I didn’t want those longtime clients to fall into a comfort zone. Even though the classes are challenging, and we are always changing our staples of Barre Bootcamp and Barre Beautiful–those aren’t going away by any means!–I though it would be good for our minds AND our muscles to mix it up and have some novelty.” Continue reading “New Schedule, More Classes: Behind the Scenes with Tammy”

B Present Wellness Retreats: Your Ticket to Paradise

B Present Studio’s mission has always been to serve the whole you: mind, body, and spirit. Sometimes that means taking a respite from our day-to-day responsibilities and routines to reflect and recharge. It was with that in mind that the studio organized our very first wellness retreat to Costa Rica in January of 2016…

costa-rica-collage

…and just a few weeks ago, our second wellness retreat of 2016 took us to the beautiful Red Mountain Resort in St. George, Utah. This award-winning resort property offered the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation: guided hiking and biking excursions, a huge variety of fitness classes, a full-service spa, swimming pools, gorgeous scenery, and three healthy (and seriously delicious) meals per day. Meet the Barre Beauty: Lucy B.

If you’ve been hearing about B Present Studio for awhile now but have yet to try a class, you’re in good company: that’s exactly how Lucy’s journey started too. “I first heard about B Present through our neighbors and had always wanted to try it out, but I was always in golf season, or recovering from some type of surgery,” says Lucy, who was then a high school senior. But when her mom came home from her first class in February of 2016 raving about her newfound love for the barre, Lucy finally had to take the plunge. “I was determined to recover from my latest surgery and get cleared to try a class before I headed off to school!” And as any barre addict knows, trying “just one class” is usually only the beginning… Continue reading “Meet the Barre Beauty: Lucy B.”

The Barre Digest: Kara and the Cheeky Charleston

On Stealing Your Own Peace

I have what you might optimistically call a high threshold of tolerance for clutter.

It’s a running joke in our house that once a thing–a stack of papers, a stray chapstick, a stapler, a scarf–has been in a certain spot for more than a week or two, that’s just where it goes now. It truly becomes invisible to me. My husband, who conversely can’t stand clutter, is constantly fluttering around straightening up and moving my things.

“Babe, where’d you put my chapstick?”

“What chapstick?”

“The chapstick that was on the kitchen counter.”

“I probably put it away. Why was it on the counter?”

“I don’t know! BECAUSE THAT’S WHERE I KEEP MY CHAPSTICK NOW.” Continue reading “On Stealing Your Own Peace”

Meet the Barre Tender: Stacy

Stacy has been an instructor at B Present Studio since January of 2015. We sat down with her recently to learn more about some of her favorite things (chocolate chip cookies and wiener dogs), how she came to love the barre, and the moment that she found out she’d been saying “plie” wrong this whole time…

Enjoy!

Stacy

How did you first learn about B Present?

I first heard about it from a friend in my book club. She had been telling me about this studio, and I thought,”Who works out with a ballet barre? That sounds…kind of easy.” Also–I’m the farthest thing from a dancer. I have no rhythm; my husband makes fun of me it’s so bad. Ballet, and really any kind of dance, is very intimidating to me. But working out, getting a good sweat on, I’m all about that. And I’m always up for a challenge, so I thought, “Why not try it? What’s the worst thing that could happen?” Continue reading “Meet the Barre Tender: Stacy”

Here’s a beautiful reflection from Barre Beauty Morgan, on discovering her worth and strength deep within her own heart…Screen Shot 2016-04-20 at 10.09.54 AM

I took my stretching outside to soak up tonight’s beauty. As I was stretching I noticed how many bruises and scars I have covering my very tired legs. Though they definitely aren’t pretty, they are strong. When my head told me that I should give up, my legs and heart have always worked together to push me forward, even when I wasn’t nourishing them to do so. A brief reflection to get your mind right today from Barre Tender Amanda…

12973318_10209352737750640_4041968119694014469_o

Sitting on my own two hands would make the simple task of enjoying this breakfast much harder. I think we can all agree on that.

In the same way, self-doubt cripples me too. It’s no different than sitting on my own two hands really.

When self-doubt takes a grip on me, I am held back. I cannot be stable because I’m constantly in a state of confusion and uncertainty. Self-doubt broods anxiety and makes even the most simple daily decisions nearly impossible!

While confidence will destroy your self-doubt, self-doubt will destroy your confidence. Don’t let it cripple you and hold you back from a life peace. You were not born to be a prisoner to yourself nor anyone else.

Go in confidence today knowing that you can always recover from a mistake and that grace is right there, like a pool, waiting for you to dive in.

Barre With Baby on Board: Part II

Last week on the blog, we shared the stories of some of our barre beauties who have put active pregnancy to the test (spoiler alert: mom and baby approved!). This week, barre tender Kaley is sharing her experience with not just taking classes but leading them while pregnant with her third child. Enjoy!

Kaley

With my first pregnancy, I worked out occasionally the first 20 weeks and really didn’t watch what I ate at all. I felt like I had a pass to eat whatever I wanted, that I was “eating for two!,” and that it didn’t matter because I was going to gain weight regardless. I ended up gaining more weight than I had hoped, had very little energy, and didn’t lose all of the weight until about ten months postpartum. The second time I got pregnant, I decided to do things differently, so I watched what I ate VERY closely (resulting in very minimal weight gain – half of what I gained with my first!), but didn’t exercise at all. By the time I was pregnant with my third, I had been an instructor at B Present for almost six months and knew that this time around I was going to take care of myself all the way around; I would continue to exercise AND be mindful of what I ate. Barre With Baby on Board

***Always speak with your doctor about beginning or continuing a fitness regimen while pregnant.***

A gaggle of geese.

A murder of crows.

A colony of penguins.

A pride of lions.

We’re not sure what the right collective noun is for a large group of pregnant women, but whatever it is…we’ve got that. Something must be in the Granger water, because as of late we’ve seen one expectant mama after another sashay through the doors here at B Present–and we love seeing so many baby bumps at the barre! Meet the Barre Tender: Kara B.

Kara B. is one of three (!) instructors named Kara at B Present Studio. She’s a veteran of the fitness industry with twenty years of experience teaching group fitness, and has been teaching at B Present since 2013.

Kara-Boyles-Profile

How did you first get into the fitness industry?

I was always involved in athletics; I ran cross country and track and was a cheerleader in high school. I also ran cross country and track my freshman year in college, and it was an awesome experience, but there are so many other new things to explore in college. So at that point I transitioned from always just running to try something different. I found a step aerobics class at the local YMCA, and from that point fell in love with group fitness. When I went back to college my junior year, a small gym was opening and they asked if I wanted to teach aerobics there, and that was my first job in fitness. I think I made about $5 a class and it was mostly my sorority sisters that came to my class! Continue reading “Meet the Barre Tender: Kara B.”

Is this program for me?

We think so, but let us ask you:

Do you want to make positive changes in your life in regards to your nutrition, general well-being, and happiness?

Do you want to find a style of eating that energizes your specific body?

How about having more self-confidence, stronger relationships, and a more positive outlook on life?

Are you encouraged by working in a group and enjoy being on a team?

Do you find it easier to achieve your goals when someone is holding you accountable?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, this program is for YOU. Continue reading “Group Wellness Coaching Program Information!”

2015 Year in Review

As 2015 winds down, we can’t help but marvel at what a ride it’s been at B Present Studio. It’s hard to believe that at this time last year, our team and our studio were about half the size that they are today. The new year brings with it a chance for both reinvigoration and reflection; as we look ahead to all the promise that 2016 holds, we also look back in gratitude for all that 2015 had to offer: Continue reading “2015 Year in Review”

“My first experience at B Present was with my MOTS group from church.  I wasn’t looking for a new place to work out. I was already attending classes that I really enjoyed, but this place was different. I remember coming home and telling my husband how hard and awful it was, but that I was thinking of buying a 10 pack. He just looked at me and laughed. This was almost two years ago. I didn’t know at the time how this place would challenge and change me at the same time.

Meet the Barre Tender: Carrie

Carrie has been a B Present barre tender since January 2015, and recently took on an additional role as a wellness coach in the new B Well arm of B Present Studio. She is also a 6th grade teacher in the Edwardsburg school system.

Carrie-Pryor-150x170-150x170

How long have you been teaching at B Present?

I was in the January 2015 training class and started student teaching after that, but had to take a short hiatus–I had a calcium deposit in my shoulder and had to take some time off to recover from that–so I actually started teaching my own classes in May.

No “Justs” About It

Imagine this conversation–you’ve probably already heard it (or participated in it) a few hundred times. One person says to another, “So, what do you do for a living?”

The response might be straightforward: “I’m a teacher,” “I’m an accountant,” “I’m an engineer.”  But sometimes we can’t explain our livelihood in one word, and especially when we’re talking to women, we might hear things like…

“Oh, I’m just a mom.”

“I’m actually just a student right now…”

“I just work part-time right now.”

Have you ever noticed anything about the way we describe ourselves? Do you spot a pattern in these responses? Maybe “just” a tiny tendency to slip one innocuous-sounding little word in there over and over again?

Working Through an Injury, Part II

Life loves to throw us curveballs, doesn’t it? Sometimes you’re just hitting your stride, just getting close to reaching a goal you’ve been working toward for ages, and then WHAM–you get knocked down. Typically “knocked down” is just a figure of speech, but let’s say–purely hypothetically–you were literally knocked down by a crooked sidewalk and, I don’t know, broke your foot or something. COMPLETELY HYPOTHETICAL, PEOPLE.

Working Through an Injury – Part I

*Always get your doctor’s permission to begin or continue an exercise regimen while injured or ill.*

What is that old saying about good days and bad days, and ups and downs in life? “Some days you’re the windshield, some days you’re the bug, and some days you trip over the stupid sidewalk and break your foot.” That sounds right, doesn’t it? I’m pretty sure that’s how it goes.

“I had to share this picture with you. Just about a month apart from one another.  I’ve never thought I needed to lose weight or anything, I’ve always been tiny my whole life, but to see the evidence of barre makes me smile.  I’ve never been one to work out and had never liked it.  Amanda was the one to encouraged me to try out basics back in March and I’ve been hooked ever since.

Why Not Now?

Did you wake up this morning thinking, “You know what I’d like to do today? Walk blindfolded off the side of a cliff!”

Yeah, didn’t think so.

The unknown is a frightening thing, and doing something you’ve never done before sometimes really can feel as scary as walking into a dark cave without a flashlight. This goes for everything from moving to a new city to trying a bold new shade of lipstick. It certainly applies to starting a new exercise regimen or walking into a fitness class you’ve never done before. Humans are designed to be adaptable–so why are we so resistant to change?

If you want to have something you’ve never had, you have to do something you’ve never done.

Barre is NOT…

A question that comes up a lot when you tell people that you take barre classes is, “What exactly is barre? It’s like ballet, right?” Admittedly, barre is one of the harder forms of exercise to explain. Spinning? Easy peasy: “Stationary bike, dark room, music.” Weight lifting? No problem: “Pick up heavy thing, put it down. Repeat.” Running? No brainer: “Run. Because you’re a crazy person, apparently. Because running is allegedly a normal, healthy thing to do even when you’re not being chased by a bear.”

7 Things I Wish I Had Known Before My First Barre Class

Ask any “barre beauty” about her first experience at B Present and chances are, she remembers those first few classes in vivid detail…excruciating, sweaty, shaky, vivid detail. I’ve been a “barre addict” at B Present for almost a year now, but still remember my first class like it was yesterday. If I could go back in time and tell myself what I know now, here’s what I would say…

Continue reading “7 Things I Wish I Had Known Before My First Barre Class”

Whether you believe you can or you can’t, you’re right.

Comparison is the thief of joy.

Why B Present Studio?

“Remember your WHY. Why are you here today?”

Listen in on a typical barre class at B Present Studio. You’ll hear the pulsating beat of the music, and the huffing and puffing of your mat neighbors between sets of planks and pushups. Maybe you’ll hear some grumbling or choice words aimed at the instructor as she cheerfully chirps “Pulse, pulse, pulse!” and “Last eight!” (this is almost always a lie).

Barre Beauty Stories: August 2015

Check out Crystal Halfman’s barre story, featured in our August 2015 newsletter:

“As I walked through the doors of B Present Studio for my very first class ever and, all by myself, I was a little nervous. I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect. As the class started and Tammy introduced herself, I remember thinking, “What did I just get myself into?” I tried  to talk myself into leaving class, but I knew that wasn’t my purpose.  I couldn’t leave, I was here for something. That is when I heard Tammy say, “Why are you here?  What is your why?”  I thought for a brief moment she was talking directly to me.  How did she know what was running through my head? Tammy’s class was so inspiring and positive.  I knew I was getting more than just a workout that day.  As the sweat poured off me, I knew I couldn’t leave.  That was the beginning of my journey at B Present.

Barre Beauty Stories: July 2015

Check out Lindsey Forsyth’s barre story, featured in our July 2015 newsletter:

“For the last 15 years, I have been nursing a bad back.  I’m 31- that’s almost HALF of my life.  I suffered a stress fracture to my L4 vertebra playing soccer, and since then my back has seemed to be a downward spiral of dysfunction.  After seeking help from a series of doctors throughout my high school and college years, I came to accept that back issues would likely be a part of my life forever.  By January, 2014 the ongoing nuisances had become pretty severe pains that began to affect my quality of life and my ability to be an active mother to my three young children. Every afternoon, like clockwork, I got a persistent tension headache that wouldn’t let up until I slept at night. I almost always went to bed with aching legs and the mobility in my neck was worsening weekly. Sometimes I couldn’t stand up straight for a week.

“I recently 74cbdc35-7f7a-4d5a-b6dd-77cff4bc11b5began my journey at B Present Studio. After I had my second daughter, Addie, I suffered silently with postpartum depression.  My day to day was a constant struggle.  I was tired, cranky, and only wanted the day to be over so I could sleep.  I randomly walked through the doors of B Present and never looked back!  I got the strength I needed to reach out and get medical help.  My mind began to get stronger.  My body, definitely stronger.

“I started attending B Present Studio almost two years ago!  I was doing Insanity at the time and thought I could easily do this class.  BOY WAS I WRONG! The class was TOUGH!  Even so, I fell in love with it! I was hooked after the first class and became a monthly member and have been ever since.

Two years ago, when I was just getting into working out, my main goal was to control my weight and tone.  I think most people have physical reasons for why they may want to start working out. B Present will give you physical results quickly, but what I did not realize I would get was results in many different aspects of my life.

“I remember taking my first class at B Present Studio with Tammy thinking “well, if this workout doesn’t change my body, nothing will”.  That was in July of 2013 and I can honestly say today that I am in the best shape of my life and the smallest I have been in over 20 years.  I have done so many other workouts and nothing compares to Tammy’s method.  In addition to the workouts, I love the fact that the atmosphere at the studio is so welcoming and supportive of each other.  Tammy, I hope you know how special B Present Studio is and what you and all the “barre-tenders” have done for me and so many others.
